The Brand

Artemide Lighting has been one of the most known Lighting Design brand in the world since its inception in 1960s. Artemide is known for its ‘Human Light’ philosophy combining lighting design, innovation and in-depth research into manufacturing high quality products.

Artemide lamps are considered ‘contemporary design icon’ on an international level with its products being exhibited in most of museums of modern art and design. This speaks volumes about Artemide lighting as one of the forefront names in their field.

 

Artemide Lighting and Its Italian Heritage

The brand is founded by Ernesto Gismondi in Milan, Italy since 1960. Ernesto Gismondi was a man of talents, being a missile engineer turned entrepreneur of the year and professor. In the early ’60s he has been devoting to the planning and production of lighting equipment. He founded Studio Artemide S.a.s., a basis of today’s Artemide group along with designer Sergio Mazza.

Over the years Artemide group has enjoyed market share grow and international reach. Meanwhile, from 1964 to 1984 Ernesto was also an associate professor or Rocket Engines for Missiles at the Milan Polytechnic. His renowned creations, such as the ‘Discovery Lamp’ he held in this image are still relevant today as he passed away at the age of 89.

 

Innovation in Lighting Design

Artemide lighting has always collaborate with outstanding Italian and international universities for research and development. It has been promoting young talents and constantly adapting itself to new ideas. This is why Artemide has contributed to the history of international design with famous products like Eclisse (1967, from Vico Magistretti), Tolomeo (1989, from Michele De Lucchi and Giancarlo Fassina), Pipe (2004, from Herzog & De Meuron) and the IN-EI Collection (2014, Issey Miyake), all showed at the Compasso D’oro Awards.
